Our History

1980

The Northeast Ministry Emerged in 1980 with Richard Vargo as the first staff member and executive director. Sally Young was named as program director. In November of 1980, the Ministry moved to a permanent office on Fritz and Marvine – “Leased by the BHA, this office sent a positive message to residents and clients: Northeast Ministry, along with its idealistic goals, was here to stay”

1983

 

Sally Young became executive director in 1983. At this time, inklings of autonomy began to emerge. After a 3-year governance under the greater Bethlehem Council of Churches, the Northeast Ministry began to evolve into an independent social service agency.

 

 

 

1985

The Northeast Ministry became an official independent Social Service Agency in 1985 following a 3-year plan developed by Sally and the Board of Directors.

1993

In 1993, Northeast Ministry officially moved into the Marjorie Fink Community Building.

1997

In 1997, Sally Young passed away following 17 years as Executive Director of the Northeast Ministry. A Scholarship Fund was established at Sally’s request in her name. The goal of this scholarship was to assist students of the development in furthering their education.
